SATURDAY the 9th of MAY 2026 – 1000-1600 at Corbie Hall
“Spanish Light” is a Saturday workshop exploring the vibrant, sun-drenched world of Joaquín Sorolla and fellow painters who captured the brilliance of Mediterranean light. Known for his dazzling beach scenes, flowing fabrics, and shimmering reflections, Sorolla’s work offers a masterclass in painting light as the true subject.
Throughout the day, we’ll focus on how colour, contrast, and brushwork can be used to suggest movement, atmosphere, and the fleeting effects of sunlight. Rather than working towards a single finished piece, you’ll build a series of expressive studies designed to help you loosen up your approach and respond more instinctively to what you see.
What We’ll Explore
- Capturing strong, direct light and high contrast
- Using a high-key palette of warm and cool colours
- Broken brushwork to suggest movement and sparkle
- Painting reflections on water and sunlit surfaces
- Simplifying forms to focus on light and atmosphere
Techniques & Approach
- Working loosely and quickly to capture an impression
- Layering and scumbling to build luminous effects
- Using bold, confident marks rather than over-blending
- Exploring both brush and palette knife for texture
